Recent Council and Councillor Liason
As part of our on-going programme, troubleshooting in New Eltham, two of your
Councillors met with residents and Council Enforcement Officer, Mr Satti Heir, on
the 28th September, for a walk around Footscray Road and Avery Hill Road, looking
at issues that frequently arise. The Councillors have actioned the points and Mr
Heir has said he would like to take up our open invitation to attend one of NERA’s
monthly Committee Meetings. The Councillors will of course be reporting back to
us on all items.
Issues raised were:
- Refurbishment of benches outside
the Co-op, and the outstanding action.
- Unswept gravel deposits in the
kerbsides by the pedestrian crossing and in Footscray Road, and the action outstanding.
- The need to establish actual
responsibility for care of the Library grounds, and to monitor its on-going provision.
- An obscured ‘school’ road sign
– a work order has subsequently been issued for the offending tree to be cut back.
- Congestion/difficulties caused
by advertising unit outside the Co-op. It has now been established that although
permission was initially turned down, it has been permitted at the Co-op’s appeal.
- Improvements to the Library
noticeboards and seats in the entrance, and the action outstanding.
- An oak tree in Southwood Park
requires attention. The issue has been referred to the Parks Department and progress
will be monitored.
- The whole area of New Eltham
crossroads (currently very poor condition) is intended to be resurfaced on 24th
October; work is intended to take place between 21.00 and 5.00. Diversion signs
will be posted.
- Mattress dumped outside a shop
in Avery Hill Road; a removal order was in place and this has subsequently been
dealt with.
- Rubbish left on pavements by
flats above shops. Mr Heir has suggested an audit. This will be monitored.
Among other individual items, the
Councillors had been involved in the following planning issues, and reported on
the following:
- Former BP garage, Avery Hill
Road; now given short term approval, with conditions (2 years) to operate as a car-wash.
- STC Licensing: application approved.
- 182-184 Avery Hill Road, land
behind. An appeal for development has been turned down.
- New
nursery entrance at Wyebourne School: a ‘change of use’ permission is needed for
this, and this has now been applied for.

Where is New Eltham?
New Eltham is part of the London SE9 postal district in the Borough of Greenwich and is situated
between Eltham and Sidcup. It still has a station with a frequent service to all London mainline
stations serving the South East. It is well served for road transport with the M25 London
orbital, the M20 for the Shuttle and the M2 for the Channel ports within 15 minutes drive.

Can you spare a bit of time?
NERA Representatives are required. We've had an excellent response for road reps, but
we could still do with a few more. It's not too much of a job, and just entails
knocking on doors in your road, asking people for the next year's membership or
if they would like to consider joining, and it might take half a day, once a year.
It's a great way of getting to know the neighbours and collecting any feedback we
could act upon. It's also good to feel you're doing a bit for the community. We
also need a bit of help distributing leaflets for our next publicity push,
so if you'd like to help, contact the Chairman, details opposite.
