Public Transport Traffic Problems (May 2008)

The 162 Bus

The Committee are aware of the problems for the 162 bus turning from Dominic Drive and Molescroft and visa versa. Greenwich Council are looking into the issue.

A New Night Bus

from Central London to Chislehurst started on 9th February 2008. Route N136 does not operate to our area, but does run through the Mottingham Estate (Dunkery Road) then up Mottingham Road and would be useful for that part of New Eltham on the Chislehurst borders. It runs every 30mins most nights, but every 20mins on Friday and Saturday nights.

Announcements
The Committee is stepping up its campaign to secure better station and screen announcements at New Eltham Station for the train that calls at all stations via the North Kent Line. Currently the announcements only state the train goes to Slade Green. It in fact goes back to London calling at all the North Kent line stations including Woolwich and Greenwich.

New Timetable for trains from New Eltham.

Started 9th December 2007.

Trains to London (Mon - Sat) - The trains at 02 and 32 are retimed one minute earlier at 01 and 31.

Trains at 15 and 45 are 16 and 46. These trains are now every 15 minutes.

Trains to Crayford (Mon and Sat) - Trains at 12 and 42 (the Slade Green and Woolwich Circular) retimed 13 and 43.

Trains at 29 and 59 (Dartford and Greenhithe) retimed 31 and 01. (Rush hour times maybe different as are evenings) Sunday times unchanged.

Ebbsfleet
From November 2007 when Ebbsfleet International Station opens for Eurostar Services you will be able to travel by train to Dartford or Greenhithe Station and take FastTrack bus B to Ebbsfleet. Travel on both train and bus will be FREE if you can show your passport and Eurostar ticket. Waterloo will cease for Eurostar in November.

Shopping
Many people do know there is a rail/bus link from New Eltham Station via Greenhithe Station to Bluewater shopping centre. From Greenhithe Station you get either FastTrack Bus Service A or B. How many people know there is also a rail/bus link from New Eltham Station via Greenhithe Station to Lakeside shopping centre? From Greenhithe Station take bus service X80. For both Bluewater and Lakeside there are combined rail/bus tickets. It only costs 10p more than Bluewater!!

Victoria
In the long term we would like a Victoria train service from New Eltham, but this will have to wait until there is a major rail review.

Greenwich Card

Only one retailer in New Eltham appears to be a partner in this scheme - The Indian Ruchita Tandori (020 8850 1202) Avery Hill Road, gives a 10% discount on collection. The NERA chairman has put through most doors a news item for partners to join the scheme.

Why not ask a retailer that you use whether they will join the Greenwich Card Scheme and give a discount?

This is good for business - Good for Card holders. Please ask them to contact NERA if they join so we can inform residents and list them on the website.

If you don't have a Greenwich Card you can pick up an application form at the library, Eltham Pools or Elm Terrace Fitness Centre. Alternatively, call 020 8921 5319, or email greenwich.card@greenwich.gov.uk

The problem of cars continuing to turn from the A20 into Dominic Drive, Montbelle Road and Felhampton Road continue to be discussed at NERA monthly committee meetings. TFL have now concluded that their surveys indicate there are less turns than before and propose to take no further action. If you disagree please get in touch and make your voice heard on our Discussion Forum.

Fairyhill Park

Friends of Fairy Hill Park group was launched very successfully on 13th November 2007 at St. Andrews Church Hall, Court Road. We were fortunate to have our three local Councillors present: John Hills, Chris Taylor and Mandy Brinkhurst, who were all very supportive. A committee was formed and it will seek funds/grants to improve the park. We will shortly be giving out contact details for all those who wish to become members of the group and for those interested in becoming volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity of saying a very big THANK YOU to all those who came along on a very cold night to help us get off the ground.

Southwood Park

NERA has succeeded in persuading the Council open the gap in Southwood Park. (See below)

New Eltham Village Centre

The NERA Committee is working with Cllr. Eileen Glover to seek ways to improve the shopping area. Early in 2008 Cllr. Glover will be sending out a questionaire to all traders seeking their views. Do you have any ideas, complaints or views? Why not put them on our Discussion Forum?

Crime in New Eltham

Thefts from Allotments:

The South London Mercury has reported that gardeners are facing record levels of theft and vandalism on the Park View allotments in Southwood Road. This year alone 9 huts have been broken into and brass taps have been stolen. Allotments secretary, William Fitzpatrick has had his rotavator taken away and burned, 'It cost me £700' he said. Gardeners have asked the Greenwich Council many times for a new fence, but without success.

On 24th January 2008 the New Eltham and Coldharbour Ward Panel Meeting was held at New Eltham Library. The Panel deals with many issues including Community Safety, Police Response and Graffiti. A number of crime statistics are available as a .PDF here

Kumon Maths and English Centre

A new Kumon maths and English study centre opened in Blackfen on Thursday 1 November, giving local children the chance to join 50,000 other British children already enjoying this after-school programme. The new Centre, based at Blackfen School for Girls, runs from 4.30pm-6pm Tuesdays & Thursdays. 4.30pm-6pm Tuesdays & Thursdays. Buses 132, 13B.

Kumon was originally started by a concerned parent and maths teacher in Japan during the 1950s. Programmes complement school work and are designed to improve concentration and general confidence. Kumon is an individualised course, designed to meet the specific needs of the child, and is not based on age or ability. Over 3.7m children worldwide study with Kumon daily. Students attend their study centre twice a week and complete a small piece of homework each day. A trained Instructor supports and guides each child.
