Public Transport

Night Bus runs

from Central London to Chislehurst started on 9th February 2008. Route N136 does not operate to our area, but does run through the Mottingham Estate (Dunkery Road) then up Mottingham Road and would be useful for that part of New Eltham on the Chislehurst borders. It runs every 30mins most nights, but every 20mins on Friday and Saturday nights.

Announcements
The Committee is stepping up its campaign to secure better station and screen announcements at New Eltham Station for the train that calls at all stations via the North Kent Line. Currently the announcements only state the train goes to Slade Green. It in fact goes back to London calling at all the North Kent line stations including Woolwich and Greenwich.

Shopping
Many people do know there is a rail/bus link from New Eltham Station via Greenhithe Station to Bluewater shopping centre. From Greenhithe Station you get either FastTrack Bus Service A or B. How many people know there is also a rail/bus link from New Eltham Station via Greenhithe Station to Lakeside shopping centre? From Greenhithe Station take bus service X80. For both Bluewater and Lakeside there are combined rail/bus tickets. It only costs 10p more than Bluewater!!

Victoria
In the long term we would like a Victoria train service from New Eltham, but this will have to wait until there is a major rail review.

Greenwich Card

Only one retailer in New Eltham appears to be a partner in this scheme - The Indian Ruchita Tandori (020 8850 1202) Avery Hill Road  who give a 10% discount. The NERA chairman has put through most doors a news item for partners to join the scheme.

Why not ask a retailer that you use whether they will join the Greenwich Card Scheme and give a discount?

This is good for business - Good for Card holders. Please ask them to contact NERA if they join so we can inform residents and list them on the website.

If you don't have a Greenwich Card you can pick up an application form at the library, Eltham Pools or Elm Terrace Fitness Centre. Alternatively, call 020 8921 5319, or email greenwich.card@greenwich.gov.uk

Kumon Maths and English Centre

A new Kumon maths and English study centre opened in Blackfen on Thursday 1 November, giving local children the chance to join 50,000 other British children already enjoying this after-school programme. The new Centre, based at Blackfen School for Girls, runs from 4.30pm-6pm Tuesdays & Thursdays. 4.30pm-6pm Tuesdays & Thursdays. Buses 132, 13B.

Kumon was originally started by a concerned parent and maths teacher in Japan during the 1950s. Programmes complement school work and are designed to improve concentration and general confidence. Kumon is an individualised course, designed to meet the specific needs of the child, and is not based on age or ability. Over 3.7m children worldwide study with Kumon daily. Students attend their study centre twice a week and complete a small piece of homework each day. A trained Instructor supports and guides each child.

CANE Summer Fete

The following are of some of the actions suggested at the fete by those who called at our stall (one lucky member won a bottle of champagne!).

1. Greengrocers - we're contacting mobile greengrocers to see if we can have a weekly visit.

2. A parking bay outside the butcher's - it seems underground utilities are close to the surface here and may prevent this, but we are getting back to the council to see if this really is a 'no'.

3. Traffic calming in Green Lane - this is on the council's agenda, though progress seems slow; we're keeping the issue hot.

4. Reduction in rubbish in central areas - where the perpetrators can be identified (can you help?) the council assures us offenders will be served with enforcement orders. This is another hot topic that our councilors are continually pressing about. Residents shouldn't hesitate to phone Cleansweep - 020 8921 4661 or cleansweep@greenwich.gov.uk

5. Rubbish under the library hedges, particularly in Southwood Road - this has now been cleaned and is being monitored by the council.

6. Improvements to the Co-op car park - this is being discussed by NERA with the Co-op's regional office and with the shop.

7. Derelict empty shops - a series of letters (first phase of action) is now being sent to all owners, following earlier representations to the council.

8. Our celebrations on becoming a 'Royal Borough' - a working party has been set up; volunteers are needed; initial ideas revolve around a garden party or pageant behind the New Eltham library; we expect to be working with CANE on this.

9 Grass outside the tile shop/sweetshop - committee members are investigating possibilities here.

Some of the above coincide with initiatives we have already been pursuing, and some are new; we'll keep everyone posted as we progress. As always, more members means more pressure - if your neighbours aren't members, why not? Finally, a quick plug for CANE's table top event in the library in September - check their website for details, we expect to be there with more news (and membership forms).
