There’s no doubt New Eltham could do with a bit of smartening
up and, at the risk of introducing one more bit of street furniture, a village sign
should do just that. It’s a slow process,
but raising peoples’ consciousness of their local community has a demonstrable effect
– less litter, more neighbourliness, less crime, etc.
So, with suggestions from residents
and the NERA committee we have designed a proposed sign as above.
The elements
reflected on the sign (in very simple form) are:
-
A steam engine, reflecting the arrival of the Southern
Railway and the growth of our ‘village’.
-
A pair of 1930’s semi’s, showing the nature of our area.
-
Hockey sticks and a golf club to show our inheritance
of many sports grounds
-
Oak leaves, representing the parkland surrounding us (the
golf course and Avery Hill)

The proposed location is at the junction with Footscray Road and Southwood Road/Avery
Hill Road
